On July 10th 1943 approximately 26,000 Canadian soldiers came ashore the southern beaches of Sicily. This was the beginning of the battle of Sicily. The battle of Sicily consists of many smaller battles.

As the American soldiers fought a long the west coast, and the British soldiers fought along the east coast, Canadian soldiers fought through the middle of the island. The Americans and British caused enemy forces of Germany and Italy  to retreat to the middle of the island causing Canadian battles much harder. Canadians fought through 240 KM of mountainous terrain, more than any allied nation.

At the end there was a total of 562 Canadians killed, 664 Canadians injured, and 84 Canadian prisoners of war.

The island of Sicily was needed to attack Italy, because it is located just south of Italy and was used as a base point for Canadian soldiers and allies. The allied nations needed to attack Italy to push back the axis oppression. Once this happened they would have them suppressed.

The battle of Sicily happened because Canada and the allied nations needed it to invaded Italy and push the Axis army. To invade Sicily Canada and the allied nations broke up into three major groups attacking from the southern beaches. Americans to the west, Canada in the middle, and Britians to the east. Canada and the allies moved north fighting uphill most the way. encountering enemies in towns that were snipping from towers. In the battle of Sicily the only consequence was those who lost there lives or were injured, what we gained was a lot bigger in significance.

The battle of Sicily compared to other battles in WW1 is very different in many ways. The fighting style is different in the sense that in WW1 they used trench warfare to fight and it cost many lives and many months of battle to gain territory, whereas at the battle of Sicily all fighting was done above ground on foot, in vehicles, or in air crafts. Fighting was much easier in WW2 because instead of living in a muddy trench with other men, the soldiers sleep on dry ground and moved around the land. The weapons were much better in WW2 because of innovations in technologies making it easier for the soldier to complete there task. Bombing raid in WW2 made minimal work for ground troops and left a lot less casualties for our allies.

Now a days this is seen as a tragedy that people were pushed to the point they will invade an island to defend there nation, but back then it would have been seen as something that would have had to be done and it was an honor to fight for there nation. i think it was justified because Canadians and the allies did it stop the axis from the traitorous rain over most of Europe.

This event is historically significant because 562 Canadians were killed. 664 were injured and 84 were prisoners of war. An entire island was captured together with the allies. The people who died stayed dead, the injured healed, and the island was given back after the axis was defeated. This island was need to attack Italy and with out it Italy would have never surrendered helping with the defeat of the axis.
